A new multi-currency bill acceptor
We've started rolling out a new multi-currency bill acceptor that will add change-return functionality for users. This feature will make our automated lockers even more convenient to use: no more hunting for change just to pay the exact amount.
A bill acceptor is a large, smart, and highly practical machine. Three programmers spent a full month getting this device to cooperate, and it didn't give in easily. The data transmission protocols turned out to be quite tricky, and for good reason: they're what protects the acceptor from unauthorized data reading, which matters for equipment that handles cash without staff standing by. On top of that, adapting the cabinet to fit the new module took a while too.
Reworking the cabinet for the new device
The unit was too large to fit into our standard pull-out drawer, so we had to change the whole approach to accessing the main compartment of the locker: we installed a vertically lifting door on a gas strut instead. Now, when the door is raised, it forms a small work surface where a keyboard and mouse can be used during setup and maintenance. Overall, the result turned out quite well, and we plan to apply the same solution to new projects, including refrigerated storage units, where easy access to the technical compartment matters just as much.
